Don’t Flush That!

Right now,  the majority of people in Maryland, and across the United States, are taking refuge inside their homes. Some are working from home, others are trying to adjust to distance learning, while others still, are getting a jump start on their spring cleaning. How ever you are spending your time, we hope that it is enlightening, productive, and mostly importantly, safe!

With the entire family at home all day, everyday, your bathroom is surely working overtime to keep up! The best way to keep your home’s plumbing moving smoothly (see what we did there?) is to make sure you’re only flushing what is meant to be flushed. The general rule of thumb is that only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. The following items are often thought to be toilet safe:

  • Paper towels
  • Facial tissues
  • “Flushable” wipes (Trust us, they’re not flushable!)
  • Napkins
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Cloth materials
  • Cotton balls and swabs
Some of these items might seem safe to flush, but the truth is, they will shorten the life span of your septic system, and can cause major backups. Trust us, you don’t want that! We know that toilet paper can be hard to find right now, but we urge you to stock up when you find some, so you don’t find yourself having to use an alternative, like one of the aforementioned items.

We get it – accidents happen! So, if you find yourself stuck at home with a nasty plumbing predicament, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
